Consumer unit upgrades by Warcop Electrical Ltd

Your consumer unit, or fuse box, is the one part of the house that is there to protect you. Older boards with rewirable fuses or no RCD protection do not shut things off fast enough when a cable is damaged or a fault develops. Replacing the board brings the whole house up to the current regulations and makes everything on it safer.

A straightforward consumer unit swap takes most of a day. We test every circuit first so we know what we are connecting to, fit a new metal-clad board with RCD or RCBO protection on each circuit, and label everything so you know what each switch does. Where the earthing and bonding need bringing up to date we do that at the same time, because the new board relies on it.

You get a full test certificate and the installation is notified to Building Control through our NICEIC registration. Nothing to send off yourself.

Consumer unit upgrades are often the first job we do for a customer, usually because the old board keeps tripping, because an electrician or surveyor has flagged it, or because an EV charger or electric shower needs a circuit the old board cannot take. If any of that sounds familiar, give us a ring and we will give you a price over the phone where we can.

For commercial and larger domestic jobs we also install and replace single-phase and three-phase distribution boards, the heart of the system that feeds power around a building. Same approach: planned properly, labelled clearly, tested and certified.

FAQs

Common questions

Why does my fuse box keep tripping?

Usually a faulty appliance, a damaged cable or moisture getting into an outside socket or light. We can trace the fault and fix it, and if the board itself is old we will tell you honestly whether it is worth replacing.

How much does a new consumer unit cost?

It depends on the number of circuits and whether the earthing needs upgrading. We will give you a fixed written price before any work starts.

Do I need a new board for an EV charger?

Sometimes. An EV charger needs its own protected circuit and some older boards have no space or the wrong protection. We check this as part of any EV charger quote.
